So as I’m writing this, I’m watching the Rocket League RLCS Season 4 EU Play-In games. That may sound like a mouthful and you may think I’m speaking gibberish, so I’ll explain. No, that will take too long, let me sum up. Skip next paragraph if you already know what this is.
Rocket League is a very popular game of what can simply be described as soccer, with cars, that have rockets. RLCS is the Rocket League Championship Series, the main esports tournament for the game. So right now it’s the Play-In games, the final games that determine which teams will move on to full league play for this season.
Ok, with that out of the way, I freaking love Rocket League. I’ve got 474 hours in the damn game according to Steam, and I watch all the pro games that I can find the time to.
I really think that Rocket League has the best shot of really making esports a more mainstream, for lack of a better word, thing. My reason for that is, it’s so easy to watch. You can have never played the game in your life, and easily pick up what’s going on.
Compare that to say, Overwatch. I play that game, and when I’m watching the Overwatch World Cup I still have a hard time sometimes figuring out what the hell is going on!
RL breaking the TV barrier is already happening too. We just recently had the Universal Open broadcast on NBC Sports. Yes, RL is not the first game to get broadcast on cable TV, I know. But I feel like it’s the best. And it’s also going to eventually show up on more main channels than a dedicated sports station.
