World of Warcraft, Post Legion, and Artifact Weapons

So I happened to read this little piece on Blizzard Watch, and it got me thinking. What would I want to happen with Artifact weapons in the Post Legion world (of warcraft)?

For me it’s kinda simple, how the hell do we go back to random drops after wielding such iconic weapons as Doomhammer or Ashbringer? Being a guy that mostly plays Paladin and Shaman, that was a huge deal for me. I just don’t see how that could be topped.

I suppose it wouldn’t be as big of a deal for some of the other classes or specs. Some of the other artifact weapons don’t have that iconic status. But at the same time, getting these weapons was built up as such a HUGE deal. To go through everything we have with them, only to chuck them in the bin when the next green quality weapon comes around, that doesn’t feel right.

Speculation Time!

So what would be a good way to go about weapons in the next expansion? Like Matthew Rossi says, another expansion’s worth of traits just tacked on to the artifact would just be oh so much bloat. And let’s be honest, would also feel not so great.

The Artifacts 2.0 suggestion may work. That would involve players finding all new, even more powerful artifact weapons. This at least side-steps the issue of replacing the most powerful weapons ever with a sword that happened to be sticking out the side of a boar. But you still lose that iconic weapon where applicable. Yes, transmog is a thing, and hopefully that would happen if this were the case.

But I feel like there’s got to be a better solution. I like my Doomhammer dammit, I don’t want to get rid of it! But I really am starting to think that Artifacts 2.0 would be the way to go. Ideally with the old artifact appearances being available.

What do you think about artifact weapons in WoW? Should they be just a Legion thing, or continue somehow into the next expansion?
